Two Student Assistant Job Openings at the UCLA African Studies Center (Work-Study)

The UCLA African Studies Center is hiring two student work-study assistants for the 2021-22 academic year.  Undergraduate and graduate students with federal work-study funding are eligible to apply.  Unfortunately, fees are not provided for grad students.

African Studies Center Positions

Assistant 1 – Work-Study Position

8 – 10 hours per week
Clerical Position

Description:

  • Post events, stories, newsletters to the Center website; edit website info.
  • Typing, filing, running errands, answering the phones and taking messages completely and accurately
  • Staffing the front office, directing traffic and greeting visitors to the Center
  • Photocopying, troubleshooting copier and fax machines, assisting TAs, faculty, and staff with both
  • Researching information on the Internet and in the Library
  • Providing staff support during lectures, film screenings, and other Center events
  • Reviewing and distributing incoming mail
  • Posting and updating social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient computer skills, including Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Excel spreadsheets
  • Knowledge and experience with audiovisual equipment, LCD projectors, laptops, etc. preferred
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in a busy office environment
  • Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly, using appropriate grammar to obtain or convey information to individuals at various organizational levels
  • Ability to write and proofread documents
  • Interpersonal skills, discretion, and cultural sensitivity to interact effectively, diplomatically, and professionally with faculty, staff, students as well as foreign scholars, U.S. and foreign government officials, donors, and persons from different cultural backgrounds
  • Knowledge of Africa preferred, but not required

Assistant 2 – Work-Study Position

8 – 10 hours per week
Technical Position

Description:

  • Assist the staff with IT/AV
  • Provide support in researching and collecting data in a variety of electronic formats
  • Assist in compiling data in spreadsheets to be used for reports and grant applications and to be imported into databases
  • Assist in testing and updating content on websites
  • Assist in filming, recording, editing podcasts and Zoom video presentations, and photographing events/projects
  • Assist in designing publicity materials, brochures, programs, etc.
  • Assist in drafting proposals and written correspondence
  • Ability to provide help desk support (hardware and software) to staff and centers as requested

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products especially Excel, Word, and Outlook required
  • Knowledge of Canva, InDesign, Photoshop, and video editing programs preferred
  • Excellent communications skills for written and verbal correspondence required
  • Ability to be organized and detailed oriented is essential
  • Previous experience working on independent projects and conducting online research preferred
  • Previous experience with graphic design preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team required
  • Interpersonal skills, discretion, and cultural sensitivity to interact effectively, diplomatically, and professionally with faculty, staff, students as well as foreign scholars, U.S. and foreign government officials, donors, and persons from different cultural backgrounds
