Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Éloize, and Cavalia alum Yamoussa Bangoura’s Cirque Kalabanté presents Afrique en Cirque. Energy, strength, agility, and joy come together in gravity-defying and awe-inspiring acts. The performance will include live Afro-jazz, percussion, and kora musical accompaniment.
Yamoussa Bangoura is a multidisciplinary artist who began in cirque during his early years in Guinea. He studied the Nyamakala cirque tradition practiced by the Fula people of West Africa. He later joined Guinea’s original circus company, Circus Baobob, with whom he toured Africa and Europe. In the early 2000s, he relocated to Montreal after being recruited by Cirque Éloize – later joining the casts of Cirque du Soleil and Cavalia.

Early Global Caribbean: Conference 2: Convictions
Early Global Caribbean: Conference 2: Convictions
February 21, 2025 10:00 am - 4:30 pm
The diverse peoples who converged on the Caribbean before 1700 held a range of differing beliefs, ideas about the natural world, and understandings of social, political, and spiritual order. Considering how Indigenous, African, and European systems of thought and faith clashed, adapted, and transformed will be the focus of this second meeting. We invite participants to consider how culturally specific systems of knowledge were expressed and transformed under emergent rubrics of what would become known as religion, science, and law. We will likewise reflect on how these ideas animated the creation and maintenance of institutions of governance and knowledge production both in the Caribbean and extending beyond it. This conference grants an opportunity to weigh how the globalization of the early Caribbean marked historical changes in beliefs and ideas but also witnessed continuities that cut across the 1492 divide. In the process, a multitude of convictions about spiritual, natural, corporal, social and political order helped shape (and were reshaped by) encounters in the Basin.

"Citizen Ashe" Film Screening
"Citizen Ashe" Film Screening
February 27, 2025 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
UCLA Northwest Auditorium, 350 De Neve Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90024
Description: The Arthur Ashe Legacy Project at UCLA would like to invite the UCLA community to a screening of the film Citizen Ashe as part of the year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Arthur Ashe's Wimbledon Victory. This event commemorates one of the most significant milestones in tennis history and the enduring impact of Arthur Ashe’s legacy.
Arthur Ashe, one of UCLA's most influential alumni, was not only a groundbreaking tennis champion but also a tireless advocate for social justice, civil rights, health, and education. Ashe’s legacy goes beyond his remarkable athletic achievements, including becoming the first African American man to win Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open. He used his platform to challenge the systemic inequities of his time and fought for marginalized communities both on and off the tennis court. Ashe was particularly outspoken on issues of racial inequality, apartheid, HIV/AIDS awareness, and the importance of education. Many of the systemic issues Ashe fought for — racial injustice, access to healthcare, educational inequities, and global human rights — continue to inflict harm on individuals and communities across the world.
Join us for an exclusive celebration paying tribute to Ashe’s extraordinary contributions to the world and learn more about the ongoing impact of his legacy through the Arthur Ashe Legacy Project at UCLA. The evening will feature a reception followed by a film screening of Citizen Ashe, a biography that highlights his life and enduring influence.
